MovieDate — The Odyssey
The Blueprint of the Hero. Long before there were blockbusters, there was The Odyssey. For this MovieDate, we are going back to the source of all "Epic Lore." We’re framing this cinematic experience as a masterclass in world-building and the "Hero’s Journey." As Sunnyside 1.0 settles into its own story, we’re looking at the ancient blueprint that defines what it means to face monsters, survive the journey, and find your way back to the tribe.
We aren't just watching a story; we’re studying how legends are made.
The MovieDate Experience:
The Blueprint Analysis: Identifying the classic "Hero’s Journey" beats. We’ll look at how Odysseus’s trials mirror the challenges we face when building something new or mastering a craft.
The "Monster" Workshop: A post-movie discussion on the symbolism of the Cyclops, the Sirens, and the Scylla—and how modern stories (from Star Wars to Toy Story) still use these exact same archetypes.
Cinematic World-Building: Observing how the film translates ancient oral tradition into a visual spectacle.
What this MovieDate Builds:
Literary Depth: Connecting modern entertainment to its historical and mythological roots.
Narrative Agency: Helping students see themselves as the "leads" in their own developmental journey.
Cultural Literacy: Understanding the tropes and structures that govern almost all of Western storytelling.
Who It’s For:
The Lore-Seekers: Kids and teens who love deep world-building and complex backstories.
The Aspiring Writers: Those in the Writing or Drama Superclubs looking for structural inspiration.
The Epic Adventurers: Anyone who appreciates a grand, high-stakes journey across the ancient world.
This is the afternoon we study the map of the Hero.
